If you are a parent, do your research and be cautious before sending your kid here.
The guides are the best part as they are naive to what is going on as most of them are previous graudates of the program themselves. They do not know what's going on and that shields the children for the most part. It was a fun experience and it did help me grow as an adult. There is definitely no abuse going on.
The therapists, at least mine, were the worst experience. My therpaist, Brad Carpenter, did not send ANY OF MY LETTERS home, because i must assume that he read the letters and they were critical of the program, and that might have given my family an unfavorable impression.
Also, there was a time when a whole group of students wee guided through a narrow canyon, and these are very prone to flooding. Well, the guides claimed they checked the weather, but thunder and lightning appeared, and mass panic ensued. Now canyons are about four feet wide on average and fill up with water QUICK. The group made it out in time but it was a very close call.
All for profit extend stay convince parents of various stuff don't send home letters to your family or let you call them! Parents seriously look into your kids condition before sending them here there are way better less traumatic options. I attended and for me it was the worst experience I have ever had in my life. It has scarred me and will never be forgotten
Now if the CEO of the company that stands to benefit financially by my presence turns me away, that says a lot about how "troubled" i was when I left.
The most suspicious part about the whole thing was that almost everybody there stayed weeks longer than they were suppose to. Maybe you can figure out why. Another disturbing reality was that the therapist tried to convince my aunt and uncle as well as practically evrey other family to extend the children's stay. Not only that, the therapists (mine was Brad) would convincingly recommend that the children be sent off to another "troubled treatment facility." I can only imagine why. My aunt and uncle listened and we went to Benchmark, a facility in California. Upon arriving the CEO told my aunt and uncle that I was perfectly fine and there was no reason to be there.
From my experience as a guide, I have seen numerous lives turn around during their stay with Aspiro. It has been a positive experience for me as well. The management goes out of their way to support the guides and the students.
Make sure you hold the therapist in charge of your child's wellbeing accountable.
A quality company with superb practices to help troubled youth and adults.
This place is great for finding a therapy school to send you're child to afterwards. I was here for 12 weeks and left exactly the same as I went in, I didn't get any better until the school they recommended. This works best as a middle man, but there are less traumatizing middle men
I am going to be as fair as I possibly can here. My name is Edward Laird, and I attended Aspiro between the July 2009 and September 2009. The most important thing to realize about this organizations is that it exists to make money first and foremost. I was 17 at the time, and I did have few troubles as a teenager and my uncle thought it would be prudent to send me to wilderness therapy.
This is my opinion and not to be taken as fact
